The great thing about using airbrushing is that you get a good even fine spray. One tip from John is to put a little bit of moisturizer down first to soften everything and then the airbrush tan will cover everything up.

His second tip (moisturizing first was the first tip) is to shake the foundation well. You want it to be thin enough to travel well through the airbrush and apply evenly. You only need a couple of drops and that will cover your whole face.

John uses a nice gentle flow with soft circular motions. It looks really easy though he is a pro of course and the gentle buzz from the airbrush seems to me to be kinda relaxing. It’s like the sound of a shaver.

Tip 3 is to pick a slightly lighter color than perhaps you normally would just as a base for some key areas. Again, he only applies 2-3 drops so a little goes a long way. This is a correction, for specific areas, so you can go a little bit closer to the skin, around 2 inches from the skin.

Tip 4: before you switch to another color, spray out the airbrush contents onto a tissue or cotton pad so you don’t have any color left.

His 5th tip is to then spray your face with the airbrush but without any color in it. That’s to dry the previous layer out. You don’t want to spray wet on wet, you have to dry out each foundation layer first otherwise the finish might not be so smooth. Just as when you’re applying paint to a wall, you have to wait till one layer is completely dry before you paint on the other layer.

Tip 6 is to use fine applications of makeup at a time. If you need more coverage, don’t just spray on a thick layer. Apply a thin layer of foundation and let that dry first. Once dry you can add more but again, keep it fairly fine. Don’t try to build it up as you would with spray paint. John actually demonstrates the effect if you overspray.
